Things to Do in Gdańsk

Gdańsk sits on the Baltic coast about two and a quarter hours by express train from Warsaw, making it a long but rewarding day trip or natural overnight stop. The Long Market and the crane-lined waterfront of the Motława river are the most photographed corners of this old Hanseatic port. The city also carries deep twentieth-century significance: the Polish Post Office siege that opened the Second World War and the Solidarity shipyard strikes that helped end communist rule both happened here. Amber workshops, a compact old town, and sea-air restaurant terraces round out the visit.
